Introduction
to the Club
ESB Swimming Club (ESB SC) has been in existence for over 55 years
and has since its opening in 1979 used the six lane swimming pool
in Sportsco for the majority of its training and all its teaching
classes. ESB SC is affiliated to Swim Ireland which is the governing
body of swimming in Ireland.
Club Activities
ESB Swimming Club activities are primarily child focused commencing
with teaching classes for beginners on Saturday mornings at 10 and
11am and Sunday evening at 5pm. Swimmers progress from the teaching
classes to the competitive club where upwards of 100 swimmers ranging
in age from seven to eighteen train according to their ability from
between three to fourteen hours per week.
Teaching
Teaching lessons are one hour duration and are scheduled in twelve
week blocks. The 10am Saturday lesson is reserved for Sportsco members
only and both the 11am Saturday and 5pm Sunday lesson are open to
both Sportsco members and non members. Swimmers are streamed in
five or six groups from armbands to capable swimmer according to
their ability and each group has its own teacher.
Competitive Club Training
The majority of children (and their parents!!) are happy when they
are capable of performing the basic swimming strokes competently.
ESB SC through its training programmes provides an opportunity for
those who want to further develop their swimming skills and perhaps
pursue swimming as a competitive sport. Swimmers are again streamed
according to ability and train from three to fourteen hours per
week.
Competition
ESB SC compete successfully at all major swimming galas in Ireland
and travel perhaps once or twice per year to UK events. The pinnacle
of swimming in Ireland is the National Championships and ESB SC
generally bring a fifteen strong team to compete at this event.
We have a number of swimmers who have won their age group event
and currently have one Irish record holder.
